YU XIULIAN (俞秀蓮). A young woman adept at martial arts. Daughter of YU XIONGYUAN and LIU-SHI.
YU XIONGYUAN (俞雄遠). Called the IRON-WINGED EAGLE (鐵翅雕). Also called the OLD EAGLE (老雕). An old, retired security escort, formerly of the TAIXING SECURITY FIRM (泰興鏢行) in BEIJING (北京) and the XIONGYUAN SECURITY FIRM (雄遠鏢行) in JULU. Married to LIU-SHI. Father of YU XIULIAN.
LIU-SHI (劉氏). Wife to YU XIONGYUAN. Mother of YU XIULIAN.
YU TIANJIE (郁天傑). Called the GOLDEN DART (金鏢). A young man from ZHANGDE (彰德). Disciple-nephew to YU XIONGYUAN.
THIRD CUI (催三). Called the TERRESTRIAL GHOST (地裏鬼). A security escort who used to work under YU XIONGYUAN.

WANG DULU (王度盧). Author (1909-1977). Born WANG BAOXIANG (王葆祥), styled XIAOYU (霄羽), into a poor banner family in BEIJING (北京). Lost his father when young, entered the world at an early age. Started writing long-form novels in the 30s, over thirty works, including THE CRANE STARTLES KUNLUN, TREASURED SWORD, GOLDEN HAIRPIN, SWORD GLIMMER, PEARL LUSTER, CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, IRON STEED, SILVER VASE, THE PURPLE PHOENIX DART (紫鳳鏢), etc. Praised as one of the Four Great Wuxia Writers of the Northern School.
THE CRANE STARTLES KUNLUN (鶴驚崑崙). The first book in WANG DULU's Crane-Iron quintet, though written third, after SWORD GLIMMER, PEARL LUSTER. Originally published as a newspaper serial from April 1940 to March 1941 under the name DANCING CRANE, SINGING LUAN (舞鶴鳴鸞記).
TREASURED SWORD, GOLDEN HAIRPIN (寶劍金釵). The second book in WANG DULU's Crane-Iron quintet. Originally published as a newspaper serial from November 1938 to April 1939.
SWORD GLIMMER, PEARL LUSTER (劍氣珠光). The third book in WANG DULU's Crane-Iron quintet. Originally published as a newspaper serial from July 1939 to April 1940.
CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON (臥虎藏龍). The fourth book in WANG DULU's Crane-Iron quintet. Originally published as a newspaper serial from March 1941 to March 1942.
IRON STEED, SILVER VASE (鐵騎銀瓶). The fifth and last book in WANG DULU's Crane-Iron quintet. Originally published as a newspaper serial from March 1942 to sometime in 1944.
